Explain the reasons for growth in three sports.
You are going to produce three newspaper articles detailing the expansion and growth of these sports. Growth in the sport must be explained in the following terms:
• Participation – Numbers of people participating where have they moved from and to?
• Provision – What facilities are available? Has this been the cause of the growth?
• Spectatorship – The more people watch, the more people play. Is this true?
• Media coverage – How has this had an influence? Is it negative or positive?
Also explain why there has been this growth: Explain these changes using the following headings.
• Changes in society – Has societies view shifted? An example might be the attitude towards women in sport
• Youth culture – Focus of youth has it changed?
• National success – Has this made a difference? Look at the recent success of the British Cycling team. Has this helped the sport to grow?
• Role models – Have they caused a massive rise in the popularity of the sport?
· Influence of national curriculum – Has the sport been introduce in PE lessons and this has resulted in its growth?
Choose 3 sports – One that is highly successful e.g. football, one that has moderate success or is in the process of expansion e.g. basketball and one minority sport e.g. water polo. You may also wish to link your newspaper articles to the London Olympic's 2012.
